From the Corner of His
Eye -
Dean Koontz
~
R Valsala
I'm the kind who's compulsive--once I start a book, I think its almost
unethical not to finish it. It doesn't matter if I like the book or I hate it, wade through it I must! This trait of mine makes me extremely
wary of trying out authors I know nothing at all about. And yet... nothing venture, nothing gain...
A recent find who hasn't yet made me regret my daring is Dean Koontz. More specifically,
his novel 'From the Corner of His Eye'. You know that the 'all black' and 'all white' kind of characterization isn't 'real
life', but you can't help but cry, just a little, when a good writer creates black or white characters. You don't
believe in mystic happenings but you wish that you knew someone with Coffey's hands and
you want to believe. Sometimes of course, you just want to read a good
yarn about psychos and serial killers! Well, here's a novel that combines all of these. It's for the idealistic realist who doesn't mind
the messiness of life as long as good is finally vindicated.
Koontz is a really good story-teller. I did feel there were a couple of loose ends in his story but am willing to forgive him that for the fact
of a story that kept making me want to get ahead and see how it all comes out.
The amoral villain murders the wife he claims to be 'the best thing that
ever happened to him' for gain. But no man is an island and violence as well as good creates ripples that affect many other lives. The story
shuttles between three protagonists so be prepared to wait a bit after each chapter to find out what happens next. Be prepared,
too, to believe.
