BangaloreThe Charm of Bangalore (~1000 words)

So far Bangalore is the only important city in India that still goes by its British-styled name and hasn't been changed to Bengalooru as the local people call it--Bombay is Mumbai, Calcutta is Kolkata, and Madras is Chennai. Trying to pronounce Bengalooru, the British who occupied India before independence ended up with 'Bangalore'.

The British influence on the city can still be seen in the many buildings and bungalows here. British street and area names persist despite the changes made by modern governments--Commercial Street, Cavalry Road, Infantry Road, Brigade Road, Frazer Town.

Covers: What Bangalore is popular for, the atmosphere of the city, lifestyle.

Rights used: First North American print; other rights available.

Goa, SocegadoA Goan Christmas (~600 words + recipe)

Christmas is celebrated the world over, and that includes predominantly Hindu countries like India as well.

Goa is a little union territory-turned-state in Western India with a strong Portuguese influence from bygone days when it was a Portuguese colony. There are several old churches and cathedrals here, including the Basilica of Bom Jesus that contains the preserved remains of St. Francis Xavier.

Goans know the simple joys of life--after a good day's work and an afternoon siesta, they close shop early and relax at home after that. They are fond of fun and company and their Christmases reflect their personality.

Covers: Goan lifestyle, local Christmas celebration, food; recipe.

Rights used: First North American print; First British print; other rights available.

Did you know that disinterested and uninterested, both, exist and have different meanings? Or that teapoy and charpoy originally meant three-legged and four-legged respectively?

Being curious about the origins and roots of words and phrases, I write frequently on the etymology as well as the uses of the English language. Here are a few samples of my work, published in The Star, Malaysia:

I've written several inspirational essays and articles on the craft and business of freelance writing, including how (and what) to write for international audiences. Here are links to a few that can be found on the Web:

"Last month I read your article in Computers@Home, it was the best worded explanation on the concept of the Materials Editor of 3DS Max I have read.

My course instructor was not able to explain the Materials Editor. I was not getting the concept at all and at that time I read your fantastic article, it cleared all the doubts completely. I found your article to be in simple English and understood every word of it.

Thank you!
