The Kitchen God's Wife - Amy Tan

~ Hasmita Chander

There are different points a reader might bring up for why she liked this book so much. Reactions might go like this:

"The book is so readable!"

"Yeah, you're hooked right from the first paragraph. And the language is so comfortable to read and imagine..."

"You feel like you're listening to your own mother or grandmother telling you about her past... you don't want to stop listening, just want more and more and more!"

"The book is about relationships--between friends, husband and wife, parents and children, siblings..."

"The characters are so real--I feel I can see each of these people, their expressions..."

"Sometimes it's so delicious to read, it's almost like gossip. But just as you're thinking, 'No! This can't be true, no man would do this!' you start to see that it's possible, in fact you know that this one is this wicked."

"And it all ties up beautifully in the end. Just when you're wondering, 'So what happens next?' it all fits in and makes sense."

And all of it is true. This is the first book of Tan's that I've read, but I now know that I will enjoy any of her works. With some writers it's like this--you read one book and you like the story, the narrative and the language so well that you know you can pick any other book by her and be satisfied.

I'm glad I've found one more author like this. You don't find very many.
